the perks of being a wallflower

the world is full of so many opportunities to jump in the golden seat, to be the center of attention. everyone running around looking for their fifteen minutes of fame. so many people are so wrapped up in being this incredible, big shot person and having the most wild of times that the true beauty in life passes them right by. the cliche 'stop and smell the roses' never rang truer. maybe instead of being so eager to jump into the fast- paced reality of life, people should linger back and enjoy the carefree existence of no responsibilities before they become just nostalgic memories. maybe we all need to stop thinking about tomorrow and enjoy what we have today. and that those who do not jump to the finish line but instead enjoy the race, are the ones to see the true gems in the world.

chain me free

thomas jefferson once wrote in the foundations of our country, "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." words repeated on the lips of thousands and interpreted in the minds of millions. life; what is life exactly? the ability to breathe and exist? or possibly it is another synonym for journey. our personal journey is our life, our essence. maybe when jefferson said we had the right to life, he also unintentionally meant that we have to right to really live; to dance and sing, laugh and love, as if we only could do it once. to swing like everyone wants to be a cat and to be the very definition of life, so that when we are gone, and all that remains is our ash in the winds, they can say, "look at the life she held and ruled under."
liberty; the condition of freedom. isn't that a word every adolescent can't wait to use? freedom. to be your own man and to live by your own rules. to fly with your wings spread high and to swim to the very depths. the right to be free is one that should be used to the fullest advantage, because not only is it a state of not being bound by the chains of oppression, but also a state of being. to be free in you mind, body, and soul takes discipline and an ease of mind. not stress on what you cant change and change what you can.
and last: the pursuit of happiness. fortunately, we decide for ourselves what makes us happy. from cuddling into a small nook with a good book, to dancing on tables with the stench of booze on your breath, we choose our happiness just how jefferson intended. to whine, sulk, and complain is not only going against what our fore fathers fight for, but it is also going against our human nature. it is in our blood to be happy and content. to smile like its the first time you've seen the beauty of a sunflower or touched a the softness of a baby. maybe jefferson looked into himself and saw the souls of others, not just the needs of his own being but of everyone's. maybe we need to stop seeking the complex and return to the basics. maybe we all need to take a look into the past in order to move on with a more effective future.
